Angling History and Achievements: I first fished Withy pool at the tender age of 17 years old when carp angling was truely awesome. This era was where I gained much knowledge and hunger for carp and their enviroment. The anglers at Withy were amonst the best in the country and we didn't have the luxury of carp mags or DVD's. Everything we used was by trial and error, these were exciting times and formed the way we carp fish today. In fact some of these anglers like Pete Wilson, Phil cousins, Rich Clements are Ultima consultants today and are indeed fine anglers with an impressive track record and knowledge of the game. I am thrilled to be connected with such anglers from old. Withy was the were I devised the Withy Pool Rig in 1989 to combat the banning of the bent hook which was deadly but damaged the carps mouths. Kevin Maddocks and the syndicate voted for a ban for the carps wellfare. My first proper trial with my rig resulted with 9 takes out of 17 carp over a weekend. This was something special because Withy was a very difficult lake. The rig emptied the water over and over and was here to stay. I have conjured up a few more rigs over the years which I will share with you guys monthly or bi monthly on the web site
Most memorable angling moment: Catching the British record catfish at 61lb in 1996. Catching three 30s in 1991 in a morning. I caught 17 20s in 24hrs in 1989, these were very big fish for that time. Carp angling for me is always memorable in some way. You get out what you put in I suppose.
Favourite Venues: Cemex North lake , Frimley pits 3 & 4 , the island lake , Chillam Mill in fact theres loads I love fishing.
Future plans / Venues you would like to fish: I plan to do a bit of time on Rockford and the Roach pit because I haven't and these are more local to me than most. I would love to catch an English 50 and that is an ambition of mine. I also have my sights set on a 70 plus common from Les Teillatts in France.
Favourite Ultima products: Power Carp line has to come first. This product is the way forward where carp lines are concerned. It has everything you need from a carp line, amazing casting ability due to its suppleness but very little stretch. This helps stay in total control at range if needed when playing that monster carp. It also is virtually invisible if you slacken it off and let it sink, yes it sinks as well which helps immensely with cagey carp. This is due to the fluorocarbon coating the line has, which also then gives it amazing, unrivalled knot strength. This product alone made my decision to move to Ultima easy. I have already landed many English carp to 44.08lb and foreign carp to 59.04lb on the 12 lb breaking strain variety in a very short space of time. Power Stiff is also one to watch for this has to be seen to be believed. If you use stiff rigs or Chod rigs then look no further than this beauty. You can literally screw it up in a ball, in fact near on ruin it and with a few rubs along its length it will tranform back to as good as new. Power Stiff has an amazing diameter to boot making chod rigs a dream to tie. In fact you can use hooks with small eyes that you thought were not possible. The rig possibilities are endless. My last product has to be Power Link whiuch is also a 100% fluorocarbon hooklink, I angle an aweful lot with this type of set up.
Power Link has the be the product I utilise the most in my carp fishing whether as a hook link or as a shock leader. The key benefits for this product are its suppleness for creating anti tangle, invisible carp rigs with huge knot strength that won't let you down. I will show you some of the rigs I use in conjunction with Power Link in the coming months. This ones a thoroughbred amongst fluorocarbons and is guaranteed 100%.
Favourite rigs: The basic complicated rig. The line aligner. The Withy pool rig. The Hermit lead.
Favourite bait: Richworth Crab n Mussel. Multiplex. Ultaplex. KG1 and XLR8. |
