My first double figure smoothounds caught this year, on the Lincolnshire coast. They were caught on 12lb Power Plus with a 15-50lb Powerflex tapered leader. I use this combination of line as I have confidence in the line and knot strength it gives, which enables me to use lighter, more sporting tackle to target these hard fighting fish. Back in May I fished the Ramsey Angling Festival on the Isle of Man, fished over three days, many anglers from the mainland go over each year to fish this event. On the first day I finished 3rd in my zone with a catch of 5 dogfish and 5 whiting. The second day I was placed 5th in my zone with 14 dogs and 1 whiting. The final day was fished in terrible weather conditions, and along with almost everyone else in my zone, I failed to catch any fish. There were fish caught in other zones, though. The club organises a separate match on the Sunday, before the Presentation, and I was 2nd in zone with 3 dogs. In this particular match I fished using reels that I had already used during the competition matches, so although much used the line still performed like new, which I was pleased with. Overall I managed to win a few pounds so not too bad a week! I have been using the powerplus a bit more recently, and found this to be a tough, hardwearing line you can rely on even in the most demanding of conditions.
The Powerflex 70lb is another favourite - this is my first choice for all my casting rigs and leaders. It ties a small and neat knot which I have found to be particularly reliable. It also doesn't kink or twist and has good abrasion resistance. If the weather settles, I am hoping for a return visit to the Isle of Man to catch the Tope when they arrive, will email any photos etc, when I do. Hopefully I will be able to fish more matches as well in the near future.

Jamie Pickup Llandudno North Shore
I fished NWASAC Personel Members match at Llandudno North Shore. Conditions where not great for my target species of Dogfish but i decided i would fish the whole match for them with an ALL OR NOTHING approach. My plan was to fish at distance and hopefully land a couple of Dogfish knowing that almost everyone else would be targeting small Whiting and Rockling as conditions favoured.
I used 15lb POWER PLUS on my reels, 70lb POWER FLEX as my leader and rig body and 25lb MEMOR-X as hook lengths.
I had no fish for the first hour of the match and was watching other anglers land small fish, then along came my first Dogfish closely followed by another and another. My plan was paying off.
I finished the match in 1st place almost doubling 2nd places weight.
Having confidence in my lines played a massive part in my match plan and it worked, i fished at long range all through the match and never had one problem with over runs or crack offs, having this confidence in my line when casting i believe gave me the edge. POWER PLUS is now on all my distance fishing reels and my distance rigs are made of POWER FLEX rig bodys and MEMOR-X hook lengths, which i believe is the perfect distance fishing combination.

Mike Flynn on Ultima Products
Tapered shock-leader
Although this style of product has been around for several years, the “UltimA” range leaves the other brands behind; the line is supple lies on the reel well and as with all other “UltimA” products delivers strength when needed most.
Powerflex Clear
I personally use the 70lb strength line for making up the rig bodies, the clear is my favourite product from this range, In the UK much of or angling has the need for casting extremely long distances ,when you use UltimA products you have the confidence in the product as it need no attention

British Record Bass with Ultima Line
A great start to the New Year for Ultima as their lines go from strength to strength.
The British Sea Shore record has finally been broken for the first time in 20 Years. Steve Cave caught a Bass weighing in at 19lb 11oz using Ultima Seastrike 20lb line. The Bass Steve caught on Sandown has got to be 50 years old and very valuable, Steve managed to land the fish after his rod went flying towards the sea with the help of his good friend Allen Beanie and 5 others shining lamps over. This has been checked to be the new British Shore Bass record. |

Mark Quirk - Tope Fishing with Power Plus
This picture was taken during an open match on point west beach, Mark won the match with a catch of 4 dogfish and 5 good sized tope. Because it’s impractical to weigh them during a match all the tope caught are given a token weight of 15lb and returned to the water.
“The tope fishing on our beaches is incredible at the moment, over the last 3 days I have landed 14 all weighing between 20 to 40lb, all caught using 15lb Ultima Power Plus, in fact they have all been caught on the same reel using the same line and considering the abuse its had its showing no sign of weakening or damage. For this type of fishing where you need high knot strength and abrasion resistance it’s superb.”

"Power Plus is very, very soft, the softest main line I’ve ever used".
I’ve been testing Power Plus as snood line the past few weeks and pleasure fishing and have had good results along in matches’ as well. It works very very well, memory free, knot strength and a great colour.

"I have been using Power Plus fishing line and I am very impressed I found it very strong and extremely supple, I found no dislikes, haven’t lost a set of gear yet I am totally sold on this line. I love the colour blends in well with the sea bed. This line is something else, it casts well, knots well, no memory, tough, softness, it’s got it all".

"I have recently started to experiment with Power Plus for traces and snoods. It makes beautifully neat and tidy knots when used as a trace, it sits straight and correctly away from the rig body and lays perfectly on the sea bed. Incredibly tough and yet soft and supple, this new line is something very special".

"Power Plus performed well. After 5 hours fishing over coarse sand, it still looked and felt like new, which isn’t always true with a lot of other lines. It knots and casts well. I look forward to using this line in the future."
