Summer Update 2011
19th September 2011

With the summer now departing anticipation was high that this year will be a bumper year for the cod shoals that have been just off shore. My fellow consultant Karl Nangle made the journey from the East Coast over to the Menai Straits on Anglesey to join myself on a mission to catch some cod - something that’s been a distant memory in this area of the UK for a very long time.

We fished an area of the Menai known as Pwllfanogol (close to the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll...). We had called at the local tackle shop at Beumaris to collect some fresh Welsh crab to use as bait, and here we met with some local anglers who had earlier in the day caught some fine fish up to 6lb. We both couldn’t wait to cast our leads, and so stopped talking fishing and made a swift departure to the shore.

We fished a mark known as “Creigiau Mawr” (large rocks), and Karl was soon into a fish. It wasn't quite the monster we had been hoping for, but nevertheless it was a codling of around 2lb, which was almost immediately followed by another, and then another! However, our success seemed short lived. No sooner than three casts later the rod tips were motionless, the tide had eased and the run slowed down.

A quick change of tactics was needed, so my trusted casting reels were loaded with 14lb Power Carp®, a line that I have found really performs well in tough conditions. It was sent out to at least 150yds to explore new areas, but unfortunately this only produced dogfish after dogfish and as so as the light began to fade we decided to call it a day. One last two hook rig loaded with crab was dispatched into the depths, and soon discovered the ever obliging dogfish. I picked up the rod to set the hook, yet to my surprise the rod pulled down fiercely! I struck and was convinced a decent cod was on the end. In the Menai the water is very clear and to our surprise there where two fish! The top hook had a dogfish, but the bottom hook had smooth-hound of around 6lb. This topped off the session.

Convinced I would catch a cod this year a further trip was planned to another area of the Straits, and sure enough I managed a decent fish of 4lb followed by a succession of smaller fish.

As the Menai Straits is a tackle hungry area tough tackle is needed at all times, my favourite main line is 22lb Power Steel®, with 60lb Powerflex® leader and Silt 70lb Rig Body. Using this main line can you give plenty of confidence in demanding conditions.
