Gerald John Update
24th October 2011

Very strange fishing these days, all seasons in one at the moment, conventional Summer Autumn and winter species seem to turn up at the same tide. This makes targeting fish for comps a bit of a thinker, example Cardiff foreshore in July brilliant sunshine the winner had five well in size codling, no rays or dogs showed up, Smooth hounds moving up the channel to venues where they’ve never been seen, and countless comps having mixed bags including Conger eels, Bass, Huss, Dogs, Rays, Hounds, Mullet, flatties with Codling showing on most tides.

Here’s my summer results and update of what’s happened these past weeks.

East region Shore league, 17-07-11.
Low water around Sully, I opted to fish Lavernock point this is probably the most demanding mark on our coast line. It has a very rough rock bottom with a 7 knot ebb tide awesome.
Set up with 25lb BS - 0.40dia F1 black, 2/0 pulley rigs with crab baits. Managed two codling for 2.5 kilo helped the team into 2nd place.

Aberthaw. Low tide, 3 hrs down plus 1hour. Fished crab baits with 0.40 F1 main, 0.70 Power flex shocky, 35lb Memorex snoods, managed five hounds to 12 lb 8oz nonstop evening, should have had more but suffered with snags and hooks straightening on fish, nightmare.

Burry Port, two day angling festival. 13th and 14th August 2011. Catch, measure, continental card points and return.
First day venue was Cefn sidan, this is a flat sand storm beach, expectations Flounder and small school bass. Baits used maddies, lugworm and gutted blacks.
Used Power steel main in 6lb (0.23) onto a 30lb x 12lb Power flex TL, this is a cracking combo thin and tough enough to deal with rolling surf, with a shed full of clam shells washing about. Traces made up with Pure power Fluro with 25lb for backbone and 10lb hook snoods.
Managed to catch 38 fish, mainly small school bass with a few flounder. Most fish in section, second most fish of the day but not enough flounder to give me the extra points needed.

Second day, venue Burry port town beach. This is an estuarine sand beach with areas of mussel and tube worm. Same baits as day one.
Same traces as day one except I used a mainline in 10lb because of the scattered mussel beds.
Drew a middle peg in an unfancied zone, arrived at the beach, the swim looked good to me, plenty of mussel, tube worms and banks.
Managed to catch eight quality Flounder for first in section, and headed the days result.
Over the two days I caught most fish, 46 flounder and small school bass, and topped the table for day 2, this means nothing in the big picture as there were no points or prizes just a bit of personal satisfaction. I m sure my catch was a result of the quality Ultima lines I was using.

Gwent SAC match, 21st August. Llangennith, catch weigh return, Flat sand beach, species School Bass, Flounder and Golden grey mullet. Baits maddies.
Back onto Pure power traces as the sea here is as clear as tap water, so made use of the benefits that Pure Power Fluro has to offer, 20lb backbones onto 8lb droppers. Managed to catch four Golden greys for 2.85 Kilo and first spot.

Aberthaw, east side. 2nd September. Last realistic opportunity for me to have a go for the hounds this season, hols on the weekend then back to a heavy work schedule. Fishing 1 hour down then 3hours back up, Bait as always peeler crab, onto rotten bottom pulley rigs, made from Powerflex backbone in 0.70 dia. With a 35lb Memorex hook length, and ultra reliable F1 in 0.40 dia. Main.
A brilliant sunny afternoon session my hopes weren’t high but I did have some crabs to use up. Started off very slow. No bites until some pout turned up Just after low tide, followed by three casts that through up two 2lb codling , followed by two hounds on consecutive casts one of 7.5lbs and 10lb ish. A cracking sunny afternoon session with target hit.

East region five man team shore league. Llangennith 18th September 2.4hrs either side of Low water. Baits maddies and Lugworm. Again Powerflex tapered leaders with power steel in 6lb main with traces made wholly with Pure power all fluro, 25lb backbones with 15lb droppers, stepped up to deal with the heavy seas as after math of storms.
Landed 2 golden greys,3 flounder for 3.20 kilo.
Team result first, individually 5th.

For the first time I caught hounds from the shore on six consecutive calendar months, April to September, Golden greys from May to September and in size codling every month since a year last September, is our fishing getting better!
