The Clip Down Rig: How to make it work effectively

Improve Your Catch Rate with the versatile Clip Down Rig

A Clip Down Rig (also known as a Clip Rig) is another popular rig used in beach fishing, particularly when you need a controlled, accurate cast and want to prevent tangling. Here’s why and when it’s ideal for beach fishing:

  • Tangle-Free Casting: The primary benefit of the Clip Rig is that it helps prevent tangles, especially during long-distance casts. The hook(s) are clipped securely to the rig.
  • Long-Distance Casting: Useful when fishing for species that are further from the shore. The clip holds the hook and bait in place, ensuring that it flies through the air smoothly.
  • Secure Hook and Bait Presentation: By clipping the hook to the rig, you ensure that the baited hook remains in the ideal position when it lands in the water.
  • Prevents Hook Tangles: When fishing with multiple hooks, such as in rigs like the two-hook flapper or pully pennel, the clip helps keep the hooks separated and secure during casting.
  • Versatility with Baiting: Clip Rigs are versatile because they allow you to use different types of bait. You can change your bait quickly without having to tie a new rig every time, making it a time-saving choice.
  • Ideal for Strong Winds and Surf: The Clip Rig is great for windy conditions and strong surf. The clip holds the bait securely, preventing it from getting blown around or disrupted in the wind.

Essentials of a Clip Down Rig

Easy to make the Clip Down rig is effective in many beach fishing situations.

How to make a Clip Rig

Take a bait clip and tie it onto the end of the rig body using a strong knot like a loop knot or a figure-eight knot and attach a rolling swivel about 2-3 feet above the bait clip. The swivel prevents the line from twisting during the cast and retrieve.

Prepare the snood (roughly 18-24 inches long). This length can vary depending on your preferences and fishing conditions.

Attach one end of the leader line to the swivel using a secure knot, like a Palomar knot or blood knot. On the other end of thehook length line, attach your hook. You can tie the hook with a Palomar knot or grinner knot.

Important

On the mainline, above the swivel, attach your sinker using the lead clip or snap swivel. The weight should be heavy enough to maintain the rig’s position, especially in strong currents.
