Improve Your Catch Rate with the versatile Running Ledger Rig
The Running Ledger Rig is a popular and versatile rig for beach fishing, especially when targeting bottom-feeding species like bass, cod, ray, flatfish, and dogfish. Here we will help you make a better running ledger rig and show you how and when to use it to the greatest effect. Below are some points of how and why you should use a Running Ledger Rig when beach fishing:
- Natural Bait Presentation: The advantage of the Running Ledger Rig is that it allows the bait to move freely along the seabed, mimicking natural movements of baits.
- Effective for Bottom Feeders: The Running Ledger Rig presents bait at or near the seabed, making it a great rig for species like bass, cod, flounder, plaice, and dogfish.
- Works Well in Strong Currents and Tides: One of the standout features of the Running Ledger Rig is its ability to work effectively in areas with strong currents or tides.
- Reduces the Risk of Snags: Because the weight is fixed at the bottom of the rig, the hook and bait are kept near the seabed, reducing the chances of snagging.
- Ideal for Distance Casting: The design aids smooth, long-distance casting. The rig doesn’t tangle easily during the cast, especially when using a streamlined sinker.
- Flexible and Easy to Set Up: The Running Ledger Rig is relatively simple to set up, making it a great choice for anglers of all levels.
Essentials of a Running Ledger Rig
One of the simplest sea fishing rigs and one of the most effective. Used for surf fishing for Bass, Codling, Flatties and other bottom dwelling species. Best fished with a bait on the sea bed with a set up that allows the fish to run with the bait registering the bite direct to the rod tip.
How to make a Running Ledger Rig
The rig is composed of a lead link which goes up to a crimp, bead, a small swivel then another bead and a crimp.
Remember to leave some play between the two beads to allow the swivel to move freely. Please also remember to make sure the snood lengths are not longer than the distance between the two swivels as this may make them tangle.
Moving up the line there is exactly the same set up again of crimp, bead, swivel, bead and then crimp; again making sure to allow some movement for the swivel, then a swivel at the top of the rig.
