The Up and Over Rig : How to make it work effectively

Improve Your Catch Rate with the versatile Up and Over Rig

The Up and Over Rig is a popular rig in beach fishing, especially when you’re looking for a presentation that can handle strong currents, reduce tangling, and offer natural bait presentation. The rig is often used in situations where anglers need both reliability and effectiveness in various fishing conditions. Here’s why and when you would want to use an Up and Over Rig:

  • Suitable for Strong Currents and Waves: The rig’s design helps to keep the bait in position, making it ideal for areas with strong currents or waves.
  • Natural Bait Presentation: The Up and Over Rig allows for a more natural presentation of the bait. Since the hook is positioned above the lead, the bait can move freely in the current without dragging the line.
  • Reduces Tangles: One of the primary advantages of the Up and Over Rig is that it helps reduce tangling during casting and when fishing in rough conditions.
  • Prevents Snags: The sinker is positioned further down the line, and the hook is kept above it. This minimizes the chance of the rig getting caught on underwater obstacles like rocks or weed beds
  • Works Well with Larger Baits: This rig is excellent when using larger baits, such as whole fish, squid, or large chunks of bait. The bait hangs naturally below the hook and above the weight, making it less likely to be dragged or tangled.

Essentials of an Up and Over Rig

Easy to make the One Up One Down rig is useful in many beach fishing situations. It has the advantage of offering two baited hooks while reducing tangling by keeping baits separate.
